The Constitution is not a suicide pact

Posted by Valdart | Ideas, Politics | Wednesday 15 July 2009 10:09 pm

I am in the process of writing an article for RIF, but here’s the basis: (from Wikipedia)

“The Constitution is not a suicide pact” is a rhetorical phrase in American political and legal discourse. The phrase expresses the belief that constitutional restrictions on governmental power must give way to urgent practical needs. It is most often attributed to Abraham Lincoln, as a response to charges that he was violating the United States Constitution by suspending habeas corpus during the American Civil War. Although the phrase echoes statements made by Lincoln, and although the sentiment has been enunciated several other times in American history, the precise phrase “suicide pact” was first used by Justice Robert H. Jackson in his dissenting opinion in Terminiello v. Chicago, a 1949 free speech case decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. The phrase also appears in the same context in Kennedy v. Mendoza-Martinez, a 1963 U.S. Supreme Court decision written by Justice Arthur Goldberg.

The United States of America

Posted by Butler | Ideas | Monday 13 July 2009 11:03 pm

Who says the United States of America is limited to the area known to the world as “America?” There can certainly be more states, unified into a larger country. Not because they are “weak,” but for the mutual benefit of the peoples of both the target nation and the current United States.

What I am leading into is the proposition that Mexico and Canada join the United States. Not due to force, but because it will benefit everyone involved.

My sad conclusion

Posted by Valdart | Politics | Wednesday 8 July 2009 12:56 pm

I have come to the conclusion that the average citizen of the United States should not be able to make decisions about how they are governed. The average citizen is not sufficiently educated in political matters to be able to make good decisions.

Communism is Impossible

Posted by N'Djamena | Communism, Marxism, Politics | Sunday 31 May 2009 1:58 am

I don’t think that true Communism as pictured by Karl Marx can ever work, nor could the Russians, Chinese or Cubans ever hope to achieve it.

True communism is characterised by the abscence of two things: a government and a class system. These things can only be done away with if everyone gets (and readily accepts) their FAIR AND EQUAL SHARE.

The problem with people today, however, is
greed
. And it’s progressively getting worse. It’s not enough anymore just to keep up with the Jones’s, now it’s about outdoing them. People want more than their share so they have someone to look down upon.

A class system has just been created. Therefore, Communism cannot work, except perhaps on very small and limited scales.

All thanks to human nature.
